The Basics of Travel

Travel is the transportation of individuals between different distant geographic locations. Travel can be a single way, round trip or two ways, using either foot bike, car, train, plane, boat or other modes and is one way or multi-stop. It may be an extended stay, such as a week-long vacation to Europe or a short holiday to Hawaii, or it may be a short stopover during which you spend no more than a day. The term “travel” can also include traveling within a country or region, such as across Europe or between countries in a national or trans-national tour. In the United States, travel is commonly refers to domestic travel within the 50 states or on U.S. military bases or on any federal road managed vehicle route.

The term “travel” can also refer to the process of moving from one place to another. There are many kinds of travel, including business travel, leisure travel, or tourism. The term “travel” can also be used in a broader sense to refer to any activity that takes place primarily for pleasure, such as vacations, weddings or sports. Some people travel for business, but others do so for pleasure, as when people travel for employment. When people move from one place to another, they are said to have “moved,” though in most cases this refers to them actually being given directions to their next destination.

Because traveling has become so common, there are plenty of companies that offer services to help travelers with everything from hotel reservations to airfare. Travelers can shop for tickets and get accommodation online, through a travel agent, through other people’s travel packages or through independent travel websites. They can rent a car, rent a plane or train and arrange for airport transfers or sightseeing tours. There are now even people who plan entire trips, as opposed to just partaking in a travel activity.
